bindweedA beautiful flower, resembling a morning glory,  but blossoming from  out of a powerful, tenacious vine which grows quickly and spreads itself out over fields and covers everything in its path.   Like kudzu with pretty flowers.

It holds tightly onto  whatever its tendrils have wrapped around, and is difficult to remove.  The root structure of each plant shoots out at least four feet in every direction, and you may not realize you’ve missed growing root until the vine reappears, strong and healthy,  attached to just about everything.

Tenacious?   Binding itself to everything nearby.  Maybe a gardener’s nightmare.

But we take lessons from nature.    This is the flower offered for the seventh day of May, the Month of Mary.   We look to its firm binding power and think of Mary’s spirit bound tightly to God in all things.

May we also be so tightly bound to God that wherever we go,  whatever we experience,  we cannot be pried away from God our Savior.
