DEJA VU HISTORY – 15th CENTURY –

January 31, 2017

First,  a  little Rant –

“Deja vu all over again” ??   No!  I’m not going to state that culturally -imposed knee-jerk reaction which trivializes the actual (quite rare) phenomena.

“He who is ignorant of history is condemned to repeat it...” ??    No!    We hear that so often that we’re oblivious to its serious meaning.

But humans are always humans and similar events do come up again and we should learn from those who  lived before we do,  because they really lived in this world and gained experience.

It is arrogance, narcissism, and hubris to reject what they have learned;  and it is criminal negligence for government schools to keep a knowledge of history from us and to pass on a version of history that was rewritten by current political ideology.

bar-fancy-line

So.  Now.    I’ll just be matter-of-fact.      Factual.

It was my intention to re-study the 16th century because I know I’ll have to answer many questions about it  during this fateful year of multiple anniversaries, one of which is 1517, the reputed beginning of the “Reformation. ”

(Book recommendation:   “The Unintended Reformation”    by  Brad S. Gregory.)

But I needed to know some background and I got “stuck” in the 15th century –  an amazing and interesting century all over Europe  (anyone familiar with Game of Thrones?),  but unfortunately  a century with familiar circumstances to us in the 21st.

Let’s just do Spain.     After repeated attacks, robberies, knifings,  killings,  banditry,  political assassinations, courtroom disruptions committed by the Moors who were resident in Spain,    it became clear that Spanish citizens, the “indigenous” people of Spain,  were presented with life-and-death danger every day.

The Moors claimed Spain for their worldwide Caliphate and wanted to re-start their war of conquest.   The Moors were the “conquistadores,” so to speak against  the Spanish people.

If this was your home,  you were somewhat safe:

guadamur-castle

But if you had to travel somewhere,  or if your  home was a smaller “suburb” or remote village, or if you were a farmer,   then you faced death or capture and forced slavery and conversion to the Moorish religion.    (We call it Islam today.)

(By the way,  for those of you who have learned the re-written version of history,   the truth is that the Church forbade forced conversions to the Catholic faith.  In writing.   In documents.   All over the world.     And the penalty for those who tried it was excommunication from the Church.  And many were.   The real Church teaches that you don’t force anyone to become Catholic. )

But the Moors did force Christians to convert, according to what is written in their book.

So here is the likeness between that time and ours:     As more and more protective laws were developed in 15th century Spain,   restricting the movement of the Moors,  more and more Moors pretended conversion to the Catholic faith.    It’s in their  book that you can do that if it advances the cause.

images-rejected

I doubt if many 15th century Moors ever understood the images in this painting.   I’m sure many   Moors were repulsed by it,  including some converts.

Many more Christians were killed because of these new “Christians”  being given the same  advantages as the Christian Spanish citizens.

So now in today’s news, I read:   Because the Previous President issued some orders to detain certain people from certain countries and because the Current President has decided enforce those orders,   the entertainment-news media  (in America and in Europe)  are announcing that President Trump is “banning Muslims from entering the United States.”

A falsehood, of course,  but believed by people in those certain countries.    And so, according to some news today,  many Muslims are converting to the Christian faith in order to enter the United States.

Is there anyone in the world who will doubt the sincerity of all these conversions?     All of them?     All?

Of course not.

Is there anyone who doesn’t know that this was a successful strategy used in the past by other “converts”  and dangerous to the citizens of the target nation?

. . . .

safe-home

My loved ones and I don’t live in a safe home, like this.

And we’re not protected by soldiers looking out for us, like this:

safe-soldiers

But those who have declared themselves to be enemies of the United States are coming . . .

invading-not-migrating

. . .    by the hundreds of thousands.

And some of these have declared their intentions.

islam-willl-dominate-cr

“. . .the WORLD.”

“Freedom can go to hell” ??        Freedom is a Western value.

Deja vu?   Once upon a time there was a mindset to protect Western values:

fight

The Catholic Church has said that every nation has a right to protect itself, its citizens,  its borders and culture.    Every nation has a right to exist.

I hope indeed that this part of history repeats itself.

STRIKES, DEMONSTRATIONS, AND RIOTS – NOT

January 29, 2017

(I kind of “missed”  Sunday – returned home at noon today and promptly fell asleep for eight hours, waking up not knowing what day or time of day it is . . .   Very unnerving.   Will make up for it soon . . .  I hate missing Sundays.)

bar-fancy-line

Are you hearing what the entertainment-news media is discussing lately?

o-defiance-375

Just a few years ago (2011),   the Barack Hussein person from the White House issued an order to halt the refugee influx from Iraq      (a Muslim nation)  — for six months.

He stopped Muslims from entering the U.S.  until our government could figure out how we can tell which refugees are friendly and who are a risk to us.

Remember all the demonstrations about that?

No?

Remember the taxi drivers in New York City went on strike about that?

No?

Remember all the confusion in the airports?

No?

Remember the angry aggressive pundits on television talking about that?

No?

Remember the   Congress and Senate were defiant about that?

No?

Remember how the various Muslim advocacy groups rose up to proclaim their victimhood about that order?

No?

To repeat:    In 2011 the man sitting in the seat of the presidency of the United States ordered that all immigration from Iraq, a Muslim nation, be halted*    for six months ** until they could talk about adequate vetting.

He’s a darling.

.*       This order was done in secret by Washington.    It was not discovered until 2013,  in an investigation by ABC news.    This has since been covered up until Breitbart News brought it out in the open recently.

THE 180-YEAR OLD MITTEN COVERS OVER

January 26, 2017

Whew!  It’s been a busy 180 years!

I woke up this morning to my local radio station telling me that our state is 180 years old today!     We’ve been a state since January 26,  1837.

We’re the one that looks like a mitten.

mich

If you ask someone from Michigan “Where are you from,”    — stand back!   One of our hands will go up and we’ll point with the other hand right where we live . . .  on the mitten.

We have a “hat” too.    A two-part state that you need a Bridge to get from one part to the other.    We have a great Bridge; the Mackinaw Bridge,  Big Mac,  5 miles long  –

bridge

“The fastest five miles on the whole trip.”

And we are surrounded by four of the Great Lakes:

mich-green-and-lakes

Our mitten is green!     We know what “Lake Effect” snow means, and we’ve got great winter sports opportunities,  all kinds of summer and winter outdoor sports,  water sports,  hiking in giant sand dunes and in great forests.  We have the oldest exposed rock outcropping  in the United States.     And so many great places  for photography!

My grandparents and great-grandparents were immigrants to this state.   Legal immigrants, so proud to learn to speak English and to live just like the Americans!   They showed me that we’re not a nation of immigrants.  We’re a nation of legal immigrants.  Law-abiding citizens.

Unfortunately for the past 60 years we’ve been ruled by the increasingly-extreme Leftists in the small southeast section of our state.   Their voice over there is louder than all the rest of our state, and they have run that great city into the ground.   Only vast amounts of our tax money has been keeping them going.

ballot-box-ripped

One day   George Soros/Mrs. Clinton/Jill Stein decided they didn’t like us not voting for them in 2016 so they ordered a (rather expensive)  investigation of Voter Fraud.

The investigators found it.   The found Voter Fraud.   They found  (and this was on our local TV stations) ballot boxes that hadn’t been counted;  ballot boxes with more ballots than were possible for the precinct’s population numbers; and ballot boxes that had been opened after voting hours, overstuffed until the boxes themselves ripped open, thus invalidating all the ballots inside.    There were other details too that I can’t remember, other instances of fraudulent activities, quite a high percentage in some precincts.

These  instances of Voter Fraud occurred in that small southeast area of our state.  It began to look like the greatest amount of Voter Fraud occurs in areas where the greatest number of Leftists are.

George Soros/Mrs. Clinton/Jill Stein   quietly withdrew.

ballot-boxes

Perhaps there really should be an overall investigation of our past elections.   Perhaps the Democratic National  Committee busloads of “voters”   could explain themselves, nationwide, especially where they drive over state lines with their passengers or where they arrived too late to vote but demanded that the voting place re-open for them or where the “voters” were handed their voter registrations once they were on board the bus.

Yep.  I think Mr Trump has a good reason to wonder.

I sure do.   Mittens are meant to keep your fingers warm,  not to cover over a stolen treat.

STAR STRUCK

January 26, 2017

I’m not sure if calling them “Star Struck”  is really a nice  kind of “Humor”  but first let me take you down Memory Lane.

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA  —

fabian-bl-wh

Oh,  wait, let me do him in color –

fabian-looking

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THIS YOUNG MAN CAN DO TO A  12-YEAR-OLD GIRL’S HEART-STRINGS?

Specifically a 12-year-old girl who is just discovering boys, along with all her girlfriends!!

For a long, long, long, long, long time,  the  Hollywood  teen magazines told us only his first name.

“Fabian.”

fabian face.jpg

Teem-age idol.    Fabian . . . .    We were young, silly, barely teen-aged girls, easily affected,  uh,   physically  by all the photos we could find in the movie star magazines.   Well, the movie star magazines knew how to package a handsome teenage boy like this for our consumption!

They even told us the story about how he was discovered:   Some rock ‘n roll  talent scouts were driving down a street in Philadelphia and saw this young man sitting on his front porch, looking rather glum.    He told the men (who were scouting the neighborhood for the next teenage idol)  that his father had just had a heart attack and he was very, very, very worried about his dad.

How romantic is that!!!!    What young teenage girl could fail to have compassion — and just fall in love with him??!!

Now,  they picked him up off his front porch  (I think that story may be true – hah!)  gave him and his family lots of money, and turned him into the newest teen rock ‘n roll singing star.

fabian-cover

Only problem was,  he couldn’t sing.   He really,  actually couldn’t sing.  I guess we noticed that, after it was pointed out to us, but what did it matter?  WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?      When someone could look like that on an album cover —   it just doesn’t matter to a bunch of star struck teenage girls!

Even the boys in our school couldn’t say anything bad about Fabian.   When you are packaged and presented like that –  even the boys were silenced!

And now,  today . . . .

It’s possible to become star-struck, even when you’re out of your teenage years.

Here’s a question:    Guess who —    One day we had a brand new president and he gave his fist speech to the nation, and this is what was said about him:

Quote    (with soft, awe-stricken voice):

“The mass flickering of cell phone cameras seemed like stars shining back at him.”

Sigh-h-h-h-h-h           Read it again . . . .

Who is this man so wonderful that even the stars in the sky  pay him homage?

It’s  not  Fabian.      We teenage girls finally grew up and admitted, the guy can’t sing!  He was packaged for us  as a teenage idol singer – and we eventually found out he can’t really sing –  and his last name is “Forte.”   Fabian Forte.   Oh.  Okay.

That sentence was spoken,  quoted,  quoted again, written down  by  female “journalists” about   Barry Sotoero —   Yes,  Barry,   the man who was re-packaged as the Barack Hussein person and put into our White House.

Fabian and Barry.

Except we girls finally grew up and acknowledged reality.

SOME DARK AND DANGEROUS IRONY

January 24, 2017

(Yeah, irony is one of my favorite forms of humor;  hyperbole and absurdity being the two others.)

Two t-shirts seen at the Leftist-Women’s March this weekend:  side by side,  one woman wearing a t-shirt that said:   I Love Islam.   The woman next to her wearing a t-shirt that said:   I Hate Misogyny.

It’s absurdly and ironically funny until you realize  how the Islamic Extremists are increasingly using the Leftist Extremists, forming an anti- American, anti- Western alliance.

(Now, I’m not writing about those who choose to peacefully follow the Muslim religion, and I’m not writing about those who sincerely follow the Democrat party – or at least what it used to stand for.)

Women promoting  Islam while Islam is denigrating  women:

during-womens-march

Again:   Islam is using the Leftists. Quite successfully.  Because there is no connection to reality in Leftist thinking:   “I love Islam” side by side with “I hate misogyny.”

These Women-Leftists do not know what happens to them after they join Islam, whether it was their choice or not.       Before-After:

kayla-mueller-christian-martyr

Both ideologies  declare that they are against the violence of the West:

is-behaed-those

Irony again.

But a partnership that could be sowing seeds of a violent overthrow of our culture – since some of them declare that that is their goal.

The partnership is like just one little match lit . . .  in a box of matches . . .   in a fireworks factory.

What the entertainment-news media tells you about Islam and the Left  is not what’s happening in the actual, real world.

DADDY MADE A PLAY SPACE

January 24, 2017

(Life underneath a good snowfall) –

I could have entitled this, yet once again:  “Cooper RE-buried!”    but I think Cooper’s Daddy took care to keep him  un-buried.

s-1-daddy-made-a-play-space

That’s my grandson again,  Cooper,  pushing back the snow near his house.  Aren’t they getting cabin fever yet?    Aren’t they beginning to feel a little “suffocated”?     But Cooper and his Daddy and Mommy claim that they love living in the high Sierras, right near where the Donner Party had so much trouble with the snow . . . .   They claim they love the snow because then they have more to play in.

The base at upper Squaw Valley today is:   190 inches!    How many feet is that?

This is pretty close to what Cooper’s back yard looks like:

s-2-back-yard

Somehow, the kids find each other,  even after a third or fourth week of six-foot snowfalls.  Last weekend it was five.

s-4-neighborhood

Five feet.    This is quite near Cooper’s neighborhood during a snowfall.   I recognize those roads.  I distinctly remember pushing him around in a baby stroller in that neighborhood  —  in the summer.

Wonder what it’s like to really “play” in all that  snow?   Well, before anyone can go skiing or snowboarding,  they have to  PLOW the slopes!

s-6-plowing-the-ski-slopes

A Midwestern flatlander like me wonders why they have to plow up there on the peaks.   This is why –

s-7-plowing-because

You can probably recognize what those are;   they’re the lifts, the lift chairs – or the very tops of them.   The snow is too deep for them to work until some of the  snow is removed.

If you need help,  the California Highway Patrol will come – or try to come  –

s-5-police-car-coming

Don’t hold your breath.

Better to stay inside your house –

s-3-snowed-house

(I’m pretty sure I pushed Cooper’s stroller past this house too.)

Can you have too much of a good thing?

JANUARY 20 – LASTING IMPRESSION

January 20, 2017

From what I’ve seen and heard on this day I can’t escape the one final and lasting impression:   we have a president who seems to be genuinely proud of his country, the United States of America.

And all it stands for.

All its history.

amer-betsy

All its beauty.

All its geography,  “from sea to shining sea.”.

All its abundance.

All its normal, everyday people.

All Americans.

I saw all the new people coming into the government, and they seemed to be glad and proud that they are one of us, among us.     I think they’ll do their best.

Makes me want to be a good citizen.

These new ones have their job, now, and I have mine.

HONEST TO PETE !!!! REALLY?

January 20, 2017

Honest to Pete!!!!

exclam-25-x-30

That’s about the strongest swear word in my arsenal of mean words . .  .  but I really mean it!

I woke up this morning to   this  —

a-man

He is, of course, someone who was at Washington DC to celebrate and to support Mr.  Trump. The accompanying story and eyewitnesses say he did NOT provoke this, he and his wife were not engaging the Leftists, and you can tell because his injury is from behind!

face

All throughout the campaign I’ve had people tell me, “Tsk, tsk,  those Trump supporters are so violent….”  ––  and I was astonished, because what I saw with my own eyes were the Leftists (many of them hired by the uber-socialist George Soros and his organizations)  who were doing the pushing, shouting, spitting, throwing, damaging cars,  blocking highways,   and dearly trying to provoke a response from the Trump people.

My eyes saw one thing,  the entertainment-news media was telling me the opposite:  “Violence at a Trump rally again.”   NO!   It wasn’t like that.

These Leftists shout out  “No KKK!”  and then they use the violence that the KKK used.  They shout out  “No to Fascists!!!”  and then they use the same violence that the Fascists used.

I’ve got to run quickly now for my morning class.   If all is well,  we shall see a new president – in spite of the media rubbing their hands together and smacking their lips as they deliciously speculate what would happen if all the newly elected people were suddenly  k  ill  ed and Leftist appointed people would have to take their place . . .

Disgusting.

Honest to Pete.

THE BIGGEST IMPRESSION

January 19, 2017

music-notes-line

Each person has his own impressions of the political spectacle that we are experiencing during this presidential inauguration.   We see so many things and we hear so many people.      But from a tiny little corner of this country,  I have one too.

My biggest impression on this Inauguration Eve which I’ll probably remember years from now is this:

On my way home from class tonight,    in the car,  listening to the radio,    I heard the announcer say that some major singer sang some well-known patriotic song about America,  with Donald  Trump  in attendance   —

(I think it might have been Lee Greenwood and I think it might have been “I’m Proud to Be An American”)

—  and the announcer said      “Donald Trump sang along – AND HE KNEW ALL THE WORDS.”

pres

This man,  Donald Trump,  soon,  God willing,  to be our president,    knows all the words to one of the most inspiring, uplifting patriotic songs that makes us proud to be Americans and glad to show pride in our country!

I don’t even  know all the words to that song.   I rarely get to hear it.    Doesn’t he lead an even busier life than I ever could?

But he proudly sang along to this most wonderful song.

That tells me he LOVES this country, from deep inside himself.   It’s not just for show, not just for politics,  not just because he’s expected to say so.

I have thought before that Mr. Trump genuinely loves this country,  but this small, insignificant fact, that he knows the words of this song by heart,   gives me great happiness just to think that we now have a president who actually loves this country and what it stands for, and is not afraid to show it.

I think he’ll do all right for us.

Lil Ol’ You

January 19, 2017

(Your prayers,  prayers from little ol’ you,  are needed.   You’re not too little;  you faith is not too small.)

I know it’s not January 17th anymore,  but on January 17th the Church’s calendar remembers what happened in France on that date,  in 1871.    There was a tiny village of “Lil Ol’ You’s” that was right in the pathway of the mighty Prussian army  — and they were approaching fast.

People in that threatened village of Pontmain prayed for help.    Little, unnamed, unimportant people with hopeful faith, faith of all sizes, even the skeptical, doubting kind of faith, turned to prayer.

And the region was  also fighting an outbreak  of typhoid fever.    And smallpox.

And then the Prussians advanced on the neighboring village  and overtook it.

And then there was a weird and overwhelming display of the Northern Lights which put everyone on edge.

And then,  on January 17th, there was an earthquake –  and by then the growing sense that their prayers were not really being heard, although the dangers were increasing.

We are familiar today with a growing sense of danger.  We have an Inauguration coming up with determined Leftists making threats of violence, disruption, and . . .  worse, in our nation’s capital.    The President-Elect is in real danger.   And the danger won’t end on Inauguration Day.

By evening of that January 17th the adults were coping as best they could and children were sent out to finish up their chores.     Two of them  were near a barn on their family’s property and happened to look up and see above the barn “a beautiful lady”   dressed in a dark blue robe.    Then two more children came and saw her too.

I like this apparition of Our Lady because she is dressed in a midnight blue clothing, not the the light, holy colors she usually appears in.   The children described her gown as dark blue, covered with a pattern of stars,  and wearing a darker, perhaps black sash.   Imagine! — Our Lady in dark colors!

dark-colors

This is a plaque commemorating the visit on the wall of the actual barn.

The adults who had been praying for Heavenly help for days came – but couldn’t see anything.   They relied on the children to describe the apparition.   Most of the townspeople came out to watch.    They could feel something was happening and they began to pray and sing songs,  liturgical songs of praise.

There are many more lovely details,   but as the story ended,   the “beautiful lady”  allowed a banner to unfurl and words appeared across that banner:    “Pray, my children; God will soon answer your prayers.”

A painting of the scene of the evening of January 17th:

pontmain-painting

Eleven days later    ( !! )  the Prussians had still not attacked.  They had been stopped. The Prussian general  reported the reason:   “We can not go farther.   Yonder, in the direction of Brittany, there is an invisible Madonna barring the way.”

A small village of very few people had prayed in the face of danger and uncertainty,  and their prayers had been answered in a visible and definite way.    When troubles pile upon troubles,  no person is too small or insignificant to pray – and be heard.   There are not “too few” people to pray for the health and safety of their nation and of their leaders.

bar-fancy-line

This night I was going to post some of the threats made by the enemies of our  Smooth Transition of Power from one president to the next.    I don’t know how successful their malice will be,  but here is a partial list of the threats:

These Leftist extremists call for riots

They have published job offers, paying up to $2,500 for the day to participants.  (Help Wanted: Offer of $2,500 to Online job postings offering to provide travel expenses, insurance benefits to ‘operatives’)

CHAIN THE TRAINS!     They are forming a strategy to disrupt transportation, to stop DC  Metro trains from moving on Friday –  by the use of chains on the cars

There are multiple plans to stop people from getting into the Inauguration area

They will shut down DC bridges and highways to block access  into the city

Leftists announce their plans to create   “chaos”  to overwhelm security forces.

Leftists have many plans to target Trump supporters.      (Again!     Paid operatives attacked Trump supporters during the political rallies.  I’ve  posted that already, showing threats, punches,  property damage. . .and the Fake News media dutifully blamed Trump supporters. )

HACK ATTACK:    They have plans to take down   whitehouse . gov   on Friday to disrupt communications

Leftists have shut down several  news sites that don’t submit to the liberal mainstream media “news” agenda, some of them having their homepage  show   previous days’  information-  in other words, interfering with current news reporting.

Leftists plan to set off building water sprinklers on inauguration ball attendees

Leftists were video’d  discussing the best ways to spread Butyric acid through air vents into the rooms of Trump supporters at the receptions and balls

They are preaching HOPE HOPE HOPE that Martial Law can be proclaimed before Donald Trump takes the Oath of Office  — and if not,  to cause Martial Law during the Inauguration.

Several caches of weapons were recently found in the area near Inauguration activities in DC .  Some are admitting   there may be “a massive conspiracy to stop Trump” being planned exposing the desire of Extreme Leftists  to commit acts of  te*    rr *  or.

Oh,  I think I’ll stop now.   You get the idea.

We are not Pontmain facing the Prussian army,  but there could be danger ahead, either immediate danger for those celebrating the Inauguration or long-term danger developing for all of us,  by the actions of increasing desperation of the anti-American Leftists that are not stopped.

ICE SCIENCE

January 17, 2017

Doing my errands today . . .

ice-driveway

. . .     doing errands on a solid sheet of ice that used to be my driveway.

Getting back up onto my front porch wasn’t any easier —

ice-bricks

It was only raining today.  It shouldn’t have been this bad.

We didn’t have the major part of that ice storm that crossed the nation during this past week,  but we had an interesting “weather event” just the same.

Our temperatures are pretty warm.  It’s going to be around 40 degrees more or less, for the next few days,   and precipitation will be in the form of rain.    HOWEVER —  our ground is frozen!    The temperature of the soil is less than 32 degrees,  so when rain comes down,  the ground freezes it.

So we’ve had an “ice storm”  at ground level, I guess you could say.    Everything else above two inches is pretty soaked and happy, and our  trees and power lines are just fine.

Cooper, however ––   remember the posts called “Grandson Buried”  and  “Burying Cooper Again” ?       Well, Mother Nature’s taking aim for a third try.   Another 5 to 6 feet of snow by Friday, and probably near 10 feet total at the end of a week.  Their forecast shows heavy snow for the next   eight  days!    I couldn’t drive out to see him if I tried.

How about a Snowplow Train?  –

train-in-snow

By the way,  Cooper lives on “Donner Pass Road,”  if that tells you anything.

Ice Science:

anatarctica-dark

Not Science Fiction, though.

antarctica

These are two photos of one of the science stations on the western edge of Antarctica.   They’re relocating because two huge crevices have opened up and are growing rapidly in length, threatening to cut off these scientists and their labs.

Thousands and thousands of new volcanoes have opened up in that region of the ocean,  warming the waters,  steering the warm water currents into that edge of Antarctica, so the ice shelf is getting unstable.

It’s not “climate change.”    And charging us massive “carbon tax” fees will not stop it. *

According to scientific statistics the area covered by ice down there has increased, year by year, over the past several years.   Antarctica has more ice than before.   However, this western edge is facing strong warm water currents.

Now what is causing the increase in volcanoes, underwater and around the Ring of Fire?

I guess we’d have to turn from Ice Science to Fire Science.

bar-thorns

.*   But don’t worry.  If you don’t know much about true science and you think you might be causing planetary changes in weather,    the outgoing Barack Hussein person, in the last three days of his White House occupation,  just gave away  one-half billion of our dollars to the United  Nations  “Climate”  Fund.

Do you know how much more he has already given away?

COLONIAL BEAUTY

January 16, 2017

(  Just one observation to correct our “modern” prejudices.)

“The development of Western Civilization  has allowed for the greatest manifestation of the highest human values.”

sao-paulo-church-400

My daughter visited the above church in Sao Paolo,   Brazil,  an actual result of  Western colonialism.   It’s an attempt to glorify God and show the beauty of His Kingdom with the use of higher philosophy leading man’s spirit upward,  with order and hierarchy,  and an architecture intended to reflect the beauty of heaven, focusing the eyes on the presence of God at the altar.

Yes, those floors are mirrors!   The edges of the pews are decorated with sweet smelling flowers for one of the many weddings that take place in that cathedral.   Hopeful promises of better things to come.

Western civilization is the culmination of Greek thinking and  Roman law and governance in combination with  Christian principles.       The enemies of the West have prevented nearly every citizen from knowing what those Greek philosophies are,  what the genius of Roman government was,  and the actual Truth mediated to mankind through the Kingdom of Christ.

In fact, each of these three elements are so thoroughly denigrated today, that it seems impossible to have anything good to say about them.

Now,   real Truth is identical with Beauty and with Goodness and with Purity and with Holiness  . . .   with God the Creator.

Historically,  wherever Western Civ has spread,  there has been the spread of  kindness and respect for the dignity of the human being:

Hospitals

Hotels and Hostels   for travelers

Safe, free traveling

Universities,  schools,  and literacy

Orphanages

Exterminate the Church and the Christians;    destroy knowledge of the past.

Then cross out all those things in red.   Because all those things in red don’t come to humans just because they are humans.      They existed here and there, perhaps,  but not all together in one civilization.

Just one geographical example:     When Christian colonialism came to   African nations, for instance,  it brought with it all those things in red.     (Please  don’t look to an imperialism divorced from Catholic Christian principles.)     When Christianity was kicked out by the enemies of Western Civilization,  African nations collapsed into anarchy, chaos,  poverty, starvation, and the rule of whichever tribal despot could gain power.

And anarchy can happen anywhere.

To follow after the dystopian future vision I wrote about in the last post,   how long do you think it will take for all our institutions to also collapse – without a firm commitment to the principles and values of Western Civilization?

To my Foreign Readers:  Perhaps this explains why supporters of Donald Trump are cautiously optimistic;  not that Mr. Trump will lead us into some wonderful future and solve all our problems.    He has very little power, in the face of our anti-West Rulers behind the scenes.

No,  there is optimism because perhaps the social and political climate will now allow those who understand the value of Western, Christian, European, American ideals to live freely and without fear of reprisals and destructive opposition.

Optimism.     Hard work,   but optimism.

Something for all of us to do!

PREOCCUPIED WITH PASSING PRINCES

January 16, 2017

(Musings of a War-Weary observer)

I’ve been sick for an extraordinarily long time.  This isn’t like me,  but I think I began to falter somewhere around mid- December.    Finally, after a “collapse” in early January,  I gave in to the best remedy of all:  a cycle of rest/nutrition/reading/rest/nutrition/reading    . . .

Along the way I learned a LOT!    And here’s where I’ve been in my reading.

Join me in the Jungle of Politics!

(Don’t  read every name!!!   Just scroll down to the end of this . . .)

There.    << Is all that clear? >>          My mind has been living  in present times and historical times simultaneously — because it’s fitting.   The past instructs the present.

Each name in these charts HAS A STORY!!    Each name is a person who struggled to win power, and they did it by various sorts of warfare,  alliances,  intimidation,   influence,   including putting out rumors and Fake News.     Not unlike our political campaigns.    We think we know something when we know some details about public figures.

200 years from now poor young students will be struggling with learning the historical details of the 2016 election and the (hopefully) uneventful passing of power into the hands of America’s next “prince.”

(Oh, I don’t really, actually believe we will have emerged from the coming Dark and Ignorant Bloody  Centuries that will be following this one so soon as “200” years.   It may be that we are in for a very long extended period of time before we regain our human senses, including  recovering basic life skills,   reverence for our Creator,  a dedication to  the preciousness of children,  families,   the distinct roles of women,  the importance of the intellect,  and all the other precious foundational notions of a civilization.)

But whenever the restoration of civilization happens,    or perhaps there will be merely a “reformation” of human civilization,   people (students)   will look back on  our present time as just an extension of  the rise and fall of kings and princes,  or premiers and presidents, same as there ever was.

Sic transit gloria mundi,  right?

We are so preoccupied with our present princes that they can lead us wherever they need to in order to preserve their power.      We need to  back off from the minutiae of American (and European) politics.     The issues are far bigger.

And there is far more at stake than whether or not our political or social opinion prevails.

I think we’ve let the ball drop as we live off the “fat of the land” in an appearance of peace and prosperity, while all the while forgetting to do the hard work and sacrifice of building and maintaining a civilization.    Civilization is never built with ease and laxity.   And it never comes with ignorance of the past.

God help us.   God is there to help us.

Quicumque!

SOUR BERRIES, GOLD STRIPS, AND TOILET PAPER ROLLS

January 13, 2017

The “lesson” today began with a curmudgeonly encounter with sour berries,   two gold strips, and a toilet paper roll.

Lesson # 1 –  “New”  doesn’t always mean better.

new-tricks
In fact,  in this benighted century,  “new” almost always means worse.   Or greatly diminished.

“New” ways of doing things,  “new tricks,”   almost always means cutting corners, cutting quality  — and caring more for the Bottom Line than for people.

My first encounter with the “new” came in the form of many, many pints of berries,  raspberries and strawberries.   Good price.  Good for juicing and freezing in little cups.

1-juice

I did it.  I did all the work.     Then I  tasted the juice.    Ick!     Sour, tasteless berry juice.  I know berries grow in the summer . . .   but if they sell them now in the winter, doesn’t that mean they’ve come from warmer climates?  Southern places?   Greenhouses?   Aren’t they still berries?

It’s “new” to be able to buy berries out of season . .  .  but what are these?     Maybe the “new” way of growing doesn’t give the berries the ability to include their natural sugar.

The second encounter  was with the gold strips.

2-gold-strips

I was putting away Christmas cards – and envelopes – and was delighted to see a couple envelopes made with a heavy gold lining,  like the “good” cards we used to send to special people.

Only the gold lining didn’t go all the way through.

1-5-pretty-envelope

Just two little strips on the back and front, inside the envelope,  to make it look like the envelope was just as elegant as they always used to be.

Not a really big deal, I guess,  but the “little girl” in me felt tricked by this “new” way of saving money.   I felt a little sadness at this diminution of quality.

Third encounter?

3-toilet-paper-rolls

Yeah . . .  the “new”  toilet paper rolls.    The cardboard roll at the right is a sad reminder that the size and thickness of these rolls has also decreased — to the point that my old patterns for using toilet paper rolls in crafts:  Brownies, Girl Scouts,  first-grade classroom art projects,  and those silly little crocheted dress forms that you make to put on a little girl’s bedspread . . .    You can’t use these smaller, flimsier  imitation rolls in those patterns  . . .

And how about having NO rolls at all  (like the white thing on the left)?     Doesn’t work quite as well as they’d like us to believe.

To those people who thought up these “new” ideas:   TREES ARE A RENEWABLE RESOURCE!!!!     Making paper products employs American workers of many skills!!   Paper companies produce something of worth and add value to our economy.    Don’t be afraid to use paper — it adds;   it doesn’t waste anything!     (Of course, I’m not speaking about thoughtless “wastefulness.”)

Am I being a curmudgeon?   Maybe.    But sometimes I wonder, how much lower do we have to let the quality of everyday things get?     Paying a little bit more for smaller quantities.     Buttons and seams that come unthreaded . . . .    “Newspapers that have one-tenth of the words newspapers are expected to have.    We’ve all had these “encounters.”  What will we see ten years down the road?

Lesson # 2 –

Yes,  this is about Epiphany – the entire season of Epiphany,  the one that has been diminished by the modern  “new-improved”  version of the Church.

epiphany

Wherever you find Christendom today, you’ll observe that today is an important day on the Liturgical Calendar.   It is the Octave of Epiphany.    That is,  the Church (the real, actual Church), has given us eight days to learn, relearn, and more deeply learn the lessons of Epiphany.

After all,  only a child would want to look at the Three Wise Men and then quickly move on to “something else.”   There is much more to Epiphany to the adult mind — and we need at least an octave of days to consider it all.

I didn’t write about the three main points of epiphany this year.   Many others have done so, and I wasn’t physically able to do so.    But just to point out, though,  the three events  that Epiphany offers us are

  1.    The visitation of the Wise Men
  2.     The changing of water into wine at Cana
  3.     The baptism of Jesus

All three events demonstrate to us some aspect of the divinity of  Jesus,  who was presented to us at the very beginning of the Gospels.     All three events have significant meaning for our  eternal life, in the next world.

I’m not writing about those events, however;    I’m just calling attention to a diminished and weakened presentation of the Gospel story which obscures the splendor and majesty of Jesus,  the Son of God.     You can’t squish a whole octave into one Sunday morning sermon on the day of Epiphany.

The “new” way of having just one day of Epiphany is not a better way!    So much we no longer know!!!     So much quality slipping through our hands.

Christendom diminished.

The burden of the effort is on us to recover . . .  quality.

FUN WITH TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA

January 13, 2017

(Traveling  anywhere today?  Avoiding ladders and black cats? )

I wasn’t sure if this was Fake News or not.  You know,  “click bait.”     But I was finished with the news and thought I’d have a little fun.  At the Daily Mail!   –  always an entertaining, sometimes informative place to visit (as long as you don’t “look to the right”!)

So, here’s a screen shot from FlightAware of a passenger flight today —

flight

Copenhagen to Helsinki, on Finnish Airways.   Flight # 666.   On Friday the Thirteenth.  Going to  HEL, according to the flight controllers.     (That would be: Helsinki.)     It took off at fifteen minutes past noon.  That would be the thirteenth hour of the day;  13:15

Oh,  and the airplane itself is 13 years old!

How fun!

I didn’t really really trust the Daily Mail article so I went to FlightAware and looked it up myself.  Here’s the info from that page,  just after it landed:

BURYING COOPER AGAIN

January 12, 2017

Cooper, the grandson.   Living in the High Sierras.    In the WINTER!

6-snowed-in-400

I wrote a few posts ago about the five or six feet of snow Cooper and his family got last weekend.     And now they have another six feet.

And no electricity.  No cell phone.   I got one last short text from them – and a photo!

I presume school is closed again, because it’s hard getting around on those roads.

8-route-89

I  know this place.  It’s where you try to find the exit leading into their little mountain village.

You can get around with chains on your tires.

10-good-tracks-cr

After the snowfall, you can get around in the village too:

5-downtown-truckee

But when you leave the village and want to go home,  you’ll have to drive on those mountain roads again.

7-driving

Say a little prayer for Cooper’s Mommy.    She’s supposed to return home from a business trip today, and it’s quite likely she’s out there on these roads just as I am writing this.  She needs to drive   UP about 3,000 feet of elevation from the airport to her home.

Into the snowstorm.

STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING

January 12, 2017

ice

“Stopping by the woods  . . .    Lovely, dark, and deep . . . *

Yeah . . .   that poem.

woods

(For those of you who know some Robert Frost.  .  .)   I’m getting through it, though.

“. . . But I have promises to keep,  and miles to go before I sleep. and miles to go before I Sleep.”

 Nature spoke:

rabbit-tracks

That deep, dark Scandinavian Funk jumped out and grabbed me just as I was getting rid of the  “Evil California Toddler Virus”  that settled in during the holidays.

How easy  to withdraw from everything and smoothly drift into those Dark Woods.   It attracts . . . .

But Nature spoke – and I remembered I have some promises to keep.      A few hundred books to read.     A mother, to be.   A grandmother, to be.     A teacher,  yet to be.   I’m a soul who hasn’t been called out of this earth yet,    into those deep, dark lovely woods.    Oh, man, I was tired!   Of everything.

And then I saw the bunny tracks.

I was too tired to be out there on my driveway, to shovel the snow away, even though it wasn’t deep.      But there are those rabbit tracks!!     About three feet apart!    That bunny wasn’t tired on my driveway!    How absurd that “big me”  should be holding back when that little rabbit had used so much energy to get across.

See?  Sometimes,  and even for you, it might be just the smallest thing speaking to you from the Real World,  from Nature, and if you add a little humor, a little irony or absurdity,  you are snatched back into that Real World and you participate in a whole new outlook.

Well,  it can happen.   I know what being “trapped” is too — but here again Nature showed me what really being trapped is:

trapped-leaf

Just a moment later, after I enjoyed those rabbit tracks,  I saw this leaf.  The wind was blowing on it and it had left tracks too, but not what one would expect.

The end of leaf is trapped.   Probably in some under the snow.   Instead of making forward progress and “getting somewhere,”   the leaf has been going around and around in circles.

Mmm-hmmmm.    I could draw a lesson from that too.   I’ll just draw my own lesson;  you can draw yours.

I rejoiced with the rabbit.  I took pity on the leaf.   But both made cute tracks,  lovely patterns, and both left their mark that — they existed.

bar-gold-with-cross

Robert Frost had a really, really good reason for writing that poem, and just because  that’s a common experience to us all,   it’s a good idea to read it again;  become familiar with it in your now new stage of life,  however long you’ve been living.

(Memorize it, for fun!    Ha ha!   No teacher making you do it!!!)

You can use a Search engine;  just type in “Stopping by  Woods on a  Snowy Evening.”

GOOD CHEER

January 7, 2017

I thought I’d share   (my grandson)  Cooper’s Family Christmas card this year — although I think it could double as a New Year’s greeting.

(Yeah,  I cut off his family name for privacy . .  .)

greetings-2

Well, how’s that for pure and innocent good cheer!!!

Cooper is standing on the shore of Lake Tahoe, near his home.    I told his Mommy (my daughter)  that he really looks like he’s demonstrating pure pleasure.

Oh, no,   she said,   we told him to look into the camera and he was just being silly.   A serendipitous  moment of silliness, I would say!)

So I too wish you all a Happy New Year of just pure goodness,  innocent joy, and fun!

Good cheer to all of you in 2017!!

St. LUCIAN & THE ROSE BOWL PARADE

January 7, 2017

It’s still the season of Epiphany:  The Light of Heaven made accessible to the Gentiles.     The Light that   “dawns” on us.    Now salvation is for “whosoever”  comes.

wise-men-big-light

One of the Wise Men’s  sources of information about the birth of Christ is the Jewish Scriptures,  written in Hebrew, and then later in the Greek language that the Hebrews generally used in the culture they lived in.

scroll

These Greek scrolls which made up the “Old Testament”   Scriptures   were used by people in  Palestine at the time of Jesus and afterwards.    But, over time, they were subject to variations and errors which became apparent and troublesome.   Among those scholars who were educated enough to compare manuscript to manuscript and eliminate the errors was a man named Lucian,  the saint we honor on this day.  (His biography is muddled and obscure,  but at least we know about  this one work that he did.)

So,  note:    Historically speaking,  the Church has always   put the Scriptures in the hands of “the people.”     When fewer people used the Greek language and more knew Latin,   then the Church sponsored the translation of the Septuagint, that early Greek Bible,  into Latin.          (And so on down through history as languages developed.)

And here’s where this year’s Rose Bowl parade intersects with the historical record.

parade

So this year on January 1st,  not feeling too healthy,  I laid down in front of the Rose Bowl parade, something I don’t usually do,  but the parade turned out to be surprisingly very interesting this year.      Such skill and precision and effort and beauty!!!

And then, towards the end,  I saw one lovely float created by —  I won’t name the religious group who made it —  but it was proudly stating “Scripture Alone”  “Faith Alone”  and  “Grace Alone.”

s-s-sign

Well.     Well . . .   I’m a historian  (by university study)    and this is not a  historically accurate statement of belief — unless your church has a short history and fairly recently created this new doctrine.     Scripture Alone is not really  found within Scripture, anywhere,  (there’s a challenge for you!)  but  if Scripture Alone is so crucial,  then that eliminates the possibility for salvation for all those early Christians who lived in previous centuries who had no Bible and who had no need to read!

In the last posting I referenced the Apostles Creed and a smattering of writings by the Apostles in those first decades after Christ left this earth.      The process of gathering these writings and deciding which were valid and which were part of the canon took  a couple centuries.

Did Christianity spread during that time?  Of course.    ( By proclaiming,  by preaching,  and by careful  instruction, person to person.)    Did Christians learn the teachings of Christ during that time?   Of course.   Did Christians grow in personal holiness during that time,  drawing closer to God?   Of course.    Did Christians read the writings of the Apostles, the epistles and the Gospels during these first three centuries?   A few did,   some could,   and more and more did as these early  centuries passed on.

That’s why the church was concerned that the translations be accurate.

St. Lucian lived in the early Fourth Century.  His work was used by St. Jerome who translated the entire Bible into the language of the people (Latin),  both the Scriptures and the writings of the New Testament.     That was a monumental human endeavor,  but it was so well done,  so accurately done,  that the Latin Vulgate of St. Jerome is still the official Bible of the Church today!

During Epiphany we contemplate the Light that came into our world, and which finds Its way into our lives in so many ways, by the grace of God.    It comes to us by  hearing about it,   by example,  by specific instruction,  sometimes by supernatural infusion  . .  .  and also by reading Scripture.

Quicumque.    Whosoever.     Whoever wants the Light of God.
